Domain Name Choice

This article is just a quick guide to help choose your domain name - which is a very important part of setting up a website

  • Domain names are registered for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Domain names ending in .uk must be registered for two years at a time.
  • Names ending in .com .info and .biz have to be registered for a minimum of 2 years.

General Tips

Keep the domain name simple
You want people to find your site easily, to remember your address and to be able to quickly type it into their browser.
Try and include part of what you do in the domain name - good for search rankings
What type of domain name to choose?
It is good practice to register several similar domain names, this is particularly important if you have a brand or trademark to protect. If possible register the .co.uk, .com, .eu and .net domain names respectively, as these are the most popular/important domain names. By registering all these different types of name you can help to prevent cyber squatters and loss of traffic to similar named competitors.
When purchasing a domain name ensure that it is registered in YOUR business name. Unfortunately there are web hosting/web design companies who incorrectly register their own business name instead of yours - this poses all sorts of risks to your business.
Which domain name is best?
.co.uk indicates a "company" (or commercial organisation), normally operating for profit, in the UK. The US / International equivalent is .com although both are used globally
.org.uk - where the org is short for "organisation" - it was intended to be used by not-for-profit bodies such as charities and voluntary organisations. The US / International equivalent is .org
.me.uk - this is aimed at individuals in the UK who want to own an alternative domain name using their name, nickname, a favourite word or phrase. The US / International equivalent is .name.
.biz is short for "business" and is for use by businesses or for commercial purposes
.eu is a relatively new domain - best suited to those doing business across the European Union.
.info is short for "information" and is available for any purpose by anyone in the world
.net is supposedly short for "networks" and was intended for network-related organisations and enterprises, Internet Service Providers (ISP) and other companies involved in building/maintaining the Internet infrastructure - however many different types of businesses now use .net
