CMS Tips
- Security is very important with a CMS as commonly several people have access to the site – control who has permissions to access the site and also who can change content – this can easily be done with a CMS.
- Backup the CMS site regularly as you would be do with other valuable documents.
- Ensure that you have adequate anti-virus software & firewall etc on the PC or Mac which is being used to update the CMS (This will protect the FTP software you could use to upload a site if developing the CMS locally.)
- CMS's are more vulnerable to hacking than static sites by their very nature – Ensure you install relevant security extensions to drastically reduce this risk.
- Keep the CMS up to date by downloading the most recent version of the software – you're hosting provider might do this for you.
- The more extensions you add to your CMS the slower it will run e.g. Multimedia elements and keep those extensions updated.
- Do not use any default user names, e.g. editor, admin, etc as these are obviously easy to guess.
- Depending on your Internet connection you have the option of developing a CMS locally e.g. develop the site in the office and upload the site to the Internet when finished. This enables you to test various extensions without any risk to the integrity of the site.
- Only use extensions to your CMS which are recommended and recently updated.
- Be careful pasting text from Document applications as they contain unneeded formatting if done incorrectly – to strip text of formatting paste into Notepad or similar type application and then paste into your articles. This method strips out any formatting which will clutter up your pages.
