What is a Content Management System?

A content management system (CMS) is basically a system which manages the content of your particular web site without the involvement of a web development company once your site is up and running.

A Content Management System normally consists of two elements: the content management software and the content delivery software.

The Content Management Software allows the content manager, editor , author or administrator, who may not know Hypertext Markup Language or Cascading Style Sheets (HTML & CSS), to write, edit, remove or archive content on your respective site – crucially without the involvement of a web design company or a webmaster ( a person knowledgeable about web technologies, software and website implementation.)

The Content Delivery Software uses the information entered by the user to update the Web site. The features of a CMS system vary, but the CMS's we use at Riverside have too many features to list but they all include the abilities to publish via the Web, format documents using an interface similar to Microsoft Word, control access to editing the site, add extensions to the CMS to add specific website abilities e.g. A Google map, Calendar etc and the ability to search and retrieve content from the site.
